Asheboro, NC – Howard Russell (“Russ”) Boalick, 84, passed away on Friday, June 14, 2024, at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital surrounded by family. He was born in New Castle, PA, on March 26, 1940, to the late Howard Carmi and Eleanor Wimer Boalick. He was the husband to the late Susan Jane Chapman Boalick of 56 years.
Russ was a retired U.S. Navy and Vietnam War Veteran. During the Vietnam War he served aboard the USS Du Pont (DD-941) and provided naval gunfire support on the gunline from the DMZ to the Cambodian Border. He also crossed the equator and became a “shellback” during the traditional crossing the line ceremony. During his 25-year Naval Career he earned the rank of Captain in the Supply Corps and had many high-profile assignments, including overseeing contracts worth over $8 billion annually with the Naval Air Systems Command and managing 170 contracting professionals around the world administering contracts worth more than $1 billion for the transportation of U.S. government cargo with the Military Sealift Command. Following retirement from the Navy, he became a Senior Vice President with Digital Systems International Corporation (DSIC) before retiring once more.
Survivors include his sons, Scott Russell Boalick (Hiroko) and John Edward Boalick (Jennifer), and his grandchildren, Benjamin, Jessica, Samuel, and Eleanor. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and a sister, Jean Anne Boalick McNicholas.
A service to celebrate Russ’s life will be held at 2:00pm on Monday, June 24, 2024, at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. C. Allen Myers with military honors. The entombment will follow at Alamance Memorial Park Mausoleum. A time for viewing will be held one hour prior to the service in the chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Fund or to the St. Jude Children's Hospital.
