Mr. Hoover Smith "Jim" Martin, 91, passed away Thursday, July 2, 2009 at Moses Cone Hospital. A native of Rockingham County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Violet M. Martin and the son of the late Mr. Hoover H. and Hester S. Martin. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. He was a member of the Gibsonville United Methodist Church where he served on the administrative board, a member of the Young at Heart Club, and a member of the United Methodist Men's Club. He was retired from Western Electric / AT&T where he was always known as "Speed Man." Family and friends will remember Hoover for his kind, gentle and loving spirit. He loved his family, fishing, gardening and his daily visits to Eddie's Automotive. His daughter and grandchildren will always remember how they never heard him say a bad word about anyone. The family will take with them many precious memories. Survivors include his daughter, Linda Gail Martin of Greensboro; two grandchildren, Lori H. Holt of Gibsonville and Joshua M. House of Graham; two great grandchildren, Megan J. Holt and Harvey J. Holt III both of Gibsonville; two sisters, Shirlene Butler and Vivian E. Fowler both of Florida. A funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, July 6, 2009 at Gibsonville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jonathan Marlow, Rev. Angela Marlow, and Rev. Billy Martin officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Reidsville. The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church and other times at the home at 105 Brightwood Church Rd. Gibsonville, NC.
