Burlington - Helen Truitt Hicklin, age 95, passed away on March 6, 2017 after a full and happy life. She was a loving wife, mother, and faithful member of Front Street United Methodist Church. Helen was a native of Alamance County and was the daughter of the late Vera Richardson and Ashton P. Truitt. She grew up in a large and loving family as the younger of fraternal twin girls, with four younger sisters and one brother.
Helen graduated from Elon College in 1943. She was an elementary teacher in Guilford and Alamance counties for seven years. She wed Edward M. Hicklin on July 6, 1943 and they shared an enviable marriage for 55 years until his death in 1998.
At her church, Helen was active in the United Methodist Women, the Altar Guild and her Sunday school class, and she was an honorary member of the Administrative Board. She loved to play golf, read books, and watch basketball and football. She was a faithful friend to many and a dependable volunteer who dedicated many hours serving the needs of others.
She is survived by her adoring family; son Edward M. Hicklin Jr. and wife Miriam of Franklin TN., daughters Elizabeth Jane Dawson and husband Weyher of Fayetteville, and LeeAnn Hicklin McDowell of the home, and sisters Louise Goodell and husband Ken, and Betty Lawrie of Burlington. Helen was preceded in death by her husband and her parents, a son Robert W. Hicklin, sisters Hazel Iseley, Edna Noiles, Blanche Greene and brother Ashton P. Truitt Jr.
Helen's grandchildren include Noelle Zola (Rob) of Rockville Centre NY, Erin Hicks (Steve) of Burlington, Eric Hicklin (Amanda) of Nashville TN, Ashton Hill (Josh) of Franklin TN, Amanda Hicklin of Abbeville SC, Victor Dawson of Senatobia MS, Edward Dawson of Raleigh, James Dawson of Fayetteville and Niki Hammonds of Archdale. Her great grandchildren are Edward Cooper Hicks, Chloe Hicks, Annaliese Zola, Lauren Zola, Caroline Zola, Lucas Hicklin, Ayden Hicklin and Adelaide Hill.
A graveside service at Alamance Memorial Park will be held for the family on Monday, March 13, 2017. A memorial service will take place at 11:00 am at Front Street United Methodist Church, Burlington N.C. The family will receive friends from 10:00-10:45 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Christian Service Scholarship at Front Street United Methodist Church (PO Box 2597, Burlington, NC 27216), Hospice of Alamance County (914 Chapel Hill Rd., Burlington NC 27215), or the Baddour Center (PO Box 97, Senatobia, MS 38668) where Victor, Helen's grandson resides.
