Helen Varner Bennett, age 96, formerly of S. Joyner Street went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at The Village at Brookwood. She was a native of Guilford County and the daughter of the late Grover Cleveland and Mamie Lynch Varner. Helen retired after 40 years from Cone Mills, Mineola Plant. She was very active in the town of Gibsonville having served on the Zoning Board and The Action and Aging Club. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Elon. Helen was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Survivors include her daughter, Betty Justice and husband, John of Gibsonville; son, Jim Bennett and wife, Helen of Gibsonville; grandchildren, Johnny Justice, Christy Doug Leath and Clark Kathryn Bennett; great grandchildren, Ashley Justice, Tyler Justice, Caroline Leath, Emerson Bennett and Kennedy Bennett; sister, Nina Apple of Gibsonville; brother, Leroy Varner of Whitsett. She was preceded in death by her parents, Grover Cleveland and Mamie Lynch Varner; sisters, Ruth Varner, Christine Foust, Betty Lou Varner and Dorothy McCauley. The Bennett family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Edgewood Place for their kind and compassionate care for Helen over the past 10 years. A service to celebrate her life will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at 2:00pm at the First Baptist Church of Elon by Rev. David Durham and the burial will follow at Gibsonville City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:45 pm prior to the service at the church and other times at the home of the daughter, Betty and John Justice in Gibsonville.
