Mrs. Hazel Hudgins, age 96, of Elon, passed away Saturday, April 4, 2015 at the Hospice Home after several weeks of failing health. On January 8, 1919, in Alamance County, Ira Joseph Hudgins and Susie Cates Hudgins were blessed with the birth of their first daughter, Hazel Lee Hudgins. She was, and will always be known as "Precious" by her Heavenly Father, whom she so faithfully served. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Gibsonville, where she was a former Sunday School teacher. Hazel grew up in Gibsonville with her three brothers, Otha, Marvin and "J.D." Hudgins, who now are all deceased, and her two sisters, Mabel, who died in infancy, and Ruby Bauer, who now lives in Plant City, FL. Hazel and her husband, Franklin Ervin Loy, who died in 2010, were married for over 70 years and had one son, Larry Maurice Loy, who died in infancy. Most of Hazel's working years were with Mr. Tate at Community Appliance Company and in addition to her employment she was also a homemaker and caregiver. Both she and her husband, Ervin, were mentors too many young children throughout their married lives, among those were Nancy Simpson and Pat Harrison. Her loving relationship with them and their families has extended for over three generations. The family would like to extend a special thanks to these special ladies, and their families, for all their special love and support shown to Hazel over the years. Hazel is also survived by many nieces and nephews which are left to miss this wonderful lady. Hazel was a wonderful cook and always shared her "treats" and sweets with others, especially the firemen of Elon Fire and Rescue, Station 2. Hazel was a lady in every sense of the word and was always composed, generous and faithful, but also strong and independent. She loved her cats, especially her big Tom, named "Sammy". Before her illness she would accommodate "Sammy" by putting a stool near the window so he could see the birds she loved so much and the beautiful flowers in her garden. She would also make the "trek" to the barn several times a day to feed and check on her barn cats. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Jim Upchurch. Interment will follow at Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 8 PM Monday evening at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Gibsonville, c/o the General Fund, 221 Piedmont Ave., Gibsonville, NC 27249 or to the Humane Society of Alamance County, 711 Hermitge Rd., Burlington, NC 27215.
