Burlington, NC Harlo R. Gillgam "Red", age 88, of Garden Road went home to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at Alamance Regional Medical Center. He was born and raised in Council Bluffs, Iowa and was the husband of the late Mary Camp Gillgam. Harlo was the oldest of five siblings, two of whom are still living. In 1941 his family moved to South Carolina and he began working at the Charleston Navy Yard. It was there he met and married Mary Louise Camp who became his wife of 65 years. Harlo was a veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific campaign as a Navy Medical Corpsman. After the war he moved to Hendersonville, North Carolina, and was employed by Youngblood Trucklines as a rate clerk. In 1969 he took a job with the Interstate Commerce Commission as a Tariff Examiner in Washington, D.C., until 1991. Most of his retirement was spent in Charleston, S.C., until he moved to Burlington, N.C. in 2006 to be closer to his son. He was a member of Holly Hill Baptist Church in Burlington and was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. In his spare time he enjoyed reading and was especially interested in medical books. Survivors include his daughter, Gail Marie Harrelson and her husband, Bob of Edneyville, NC; son, James Robert and his wife, Diana of Gibsonville; grandchildren, Beth and Mark Murphy and Anna Harrelson; great grandchildren, Drew, Trevor and Skylar Murphy and two sisters. He was preceded in death by his wife, daughters, Ann Gillgam Butler and Doris Jean Green; parents, Vernon and Blanche Davis Gillgam and two brothers. The funeral service will be held on Friday, February 5, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor John Cornette and the entombment will follow at Alamance Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. on Thursday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.
