H. Douglas "Doug" Garenr, 91, previously of Newport News, Va., passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at the home of his niece in Gap, Pa. He was the beloved husband of Harlene Proffit Garner with whom he shared 62 years of marriage. Born in Sanford, Floirda, Seminole County, he was the son of the late Nathan and Elvira Garner. His mother was the author of the best-selling book named "Ezekel." He gradated with a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech. He spent over fifty years on the research staff of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration NASA and its predecessor, the National Advisroy Committee for Aeronautics before retiring as a Senior Scientist in 1995. During this time he earned a number of prestigious awards, including the NASA Medal for Outstanding Accomplishment in the field of aerospace guidance and control, the Experimental Aircraft Association's Stan Ditzik Memorial Award for Outstanding Design Contribution for the developement of the Electro-Fluidic Autopilot, and two R&D 100 awards for development of the Smart Compass and the Braille Mouse. He retains the honrorary NASA title of Distingushed Research Associate. He has presented numerious forums at Experimental Aircraft Association fly-ins at Oshkosh and at Sun'n Fun at Lakeland, Florida on the subject of home-built aircraft instrumentation, ahd has published a number of technical papers on various aspects of aerospace guidance and control. He has been awarded nine US patents. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 1:00pm at Magnolia Cemetery in Elon by David Proffit.
