Mebane - Gordon Elmo Phelps, 90, passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2016 at his home.
He was born in Person County and was the son of the late Lewis Elmo Phelps and Catherine Walker Phelps. He was married for 68 years to Mae DeWitt Phelps who died on August 20, 2015. Gordon was a U.S. Navy veteran and a diesel mechanic for Associated Transport and Pilot Freight. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and great great grandfather who enjoyed farming, flowers, tractors and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his daughter, Sharon (Cecil) Butler of Burlington; sons, Dwight (Janette) Phelps of Mebane, Tony (Sandra) Phelps of Mebane; ten grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and two brothers, Latham and Milton Phelps.
A graveside service will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday at Hebron Methodist Church Cemetery by Rev. Paul Cecil. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the graveside service. Mr. Phelps will be available for viewing at Lowe Funeral Home from noon Wednesday until being taken to the graveside for services.
