Glenn Hughes Thompson, 96 years old, passed away on Monday, March 24, 2025 after five years of failing health. He was born in Mebane, North Carolina to the late William and Bessie Rice Thompson. Glenn was married to the love of his life, Marie Thompson for 57 years before her death in 2004. Glenn was a 1947 graduate of Mebane High School and a veteran of the United States Army National Guard. He retired from Western Electric (Lucent Technologies) after over 40 years of service. Glenn was member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where he faithfully served as a Ruling Elder and was honored to be installed as Elder Emeritus. He was a mentor to youth, a member of Promise Keepers and often drove the church van. Glenn especially enjoyed singing in the choir. He quietly lived out a life of faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. Glenn enjoyed helping others and delivered Meals on Wheels up until he was 90 years old. He enjoyed working in his garden and grew beautiful flowers. He enjoyed traveling with family and friends and especially enjoyed time at the beach. Glenn had a kind spirit, a good sense of humor and simply enjoyed life. He was known as “Pop” to many as he and Marie opened their home and their hearts to G.W.’s friends and to others. He was especially excited to obtain the names “Paw Paw” and “Great Paw Paw.” He will be remembered affectionately by many.
Glenn is survived by his son G.W. Thompson (Kathie); granddaughter, Krista Thompson Dugger (Leonard); great grandchildren, Isaiah and Jayden Dugger. He is also survived by a foster son, Donald Cowan (Vickie); grandchildren, Kristina Ferguson (John) and Amanda Kniskern; great grandchildren, Kristopher and Sarah Ferguson, Jenieve Kniskern and Jaiden Barclift; niece, Brenda Saul, and nephews Melvin and Billy Dodson.
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and his siblings Tyson Thompson, Annie Ruth Thompson Dodson, Dace Barton and Delbert Barton.
The family wishes to extend love and a special thank you to Jackie Baker and her family for their love and companionship over the last twenty years. Heartfelt gratitude is extended to Reverend Powell Sykes, Glenn’s pastor, for his faithful, weekly visits and to the staff of Liberty Commons for caring for “Pop” these last years.
The family will receive friends at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory from 1:00 – 1:45 p.m., Tuesday, April 1, 2025.
