Gerald Turney

Gerald Bruce Turney, 72, went home to be with the Lord at Alamance Regional Medical Center surrounded by his family on January 6, 2022. He was born on November 12, 1949 to Bruce and Geri Turney in Gastonia, NC and was married for 27 years to Julie Tucker Turney.

Gerald graduated from Graham High School. He attended Appalachian State University and then graduated from Greensboro College. He served in the US Army and was a Vietnam Veteran. He was exposed to agent orange while serving and experienced health related issues in recent years as a result. He fought courageously to win the battle with these health problems and his faith in God was an inspiration to all who encountered him in this journey. He is finally at rest with Jesus.

He worked as a Program Director at the YMCA where he tirelessly served the community through the many programs that were offered. He then worked for AT&T until retirement. He was an accomplished athlete and participated in many sports throughout the years. He was particularly known for his skills on the racquetball court. He enjoyed rock-climbing, white-water kayaking, hiking, camping, fishing, and disc golf. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He was famous for his chili and cornbread. He will be missed by so many.

He is survived by his wife, Julie, children, Scott Williams (Holly), Brook Hambright (Matt), Jonathan Ledford (Kelsee), Chris Turney, Catherine Delaney (Matt), and David Turney; grandchildren, Sam, Jonathan and Thomas Williams, Jacob, Rose, Juliette and Titus Hambright, Carter Ledford, and Lavinia and Cordelia Delaney. One of the greatest joys of his life was being Dad and Poppi.

There will be a Celebration of Life service at: Mt Zion Baptist Church 3572 W Greensboro Chapel Hill Rd. Liberty, NC 27298 on Saturday, January 15, 2022 Visitation: 1:00-1:45pm Service: 2:00pm
