Gerald Toombs

Gerald "Papa" Averette Toombs, Sr. age 72 went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 11, 2013 at Select Specialty Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born in Rockingham County and is survived by his wife of 50 years, Judy Harbour Toombs. Gerald retired from Copeland Fabrics after 28 years and was a route carrier for 10 years with the Greensboro News and Record. He was a US Army veteran and an avid gardener, enjoying canning vegetables for family and friends. He loved his yorkie named "Toby" and his two dachshunds named "Buster and "Mona". Gerald was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Survivors include his wife, Judy Harbour Toombs of the home; daughters, Yvonne Garner and husband, Jimmy, and Angela Ledford and husband, Darry, l both of Burlington; sons Ricky Wilson of Yanceyville and Gerald Averette Toombs, Jr. of Burlington; 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren; sisters, Geneva Neal and husband, Ben of Haw River, Kay Troxler and husband, Melvin of Burlington, Patricia Hensley and husband, Tommy of Elon and Ruby Mathis of Burlington; brothers, David Stallings and wife, Sandra of Lexington and Fred Stallings and wife, Tracey of Reidsville. He was preceded in death by his son, Nicholas "Mickey" Wilson; parents, Johnny Leslie Toombs and Alice Virginia Harrington Toombs Stallings; step father, James A. Stallings; twin brother, Earl Everette Toombs and brother, Robert Stallings and a sister, Wilma Stallings. The family would like to thank his special friend and brother, Fred for his loving care and devotion to Gerald. A service to celebrate his life will be held on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Ronnie Brown and Pastor Ron Harris. The burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home and other times at the home.
