BURLINGTON- Mr. George Aubrie Underwood, age 81, of 948 Mark Dr., died peacefully on Friday, July 27, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family. A native of Alamance County, he was the son of the late Lonnie and Jennie King Underwood and was married for over 57 years to his loving wife, Mrs. Sara Saunders, who survives. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War Conflict from 1952-1953 and was honorably discharged at the rank of Corporal in 1953. Aubrie was the owner and operator of Underwood Backhoe Service for 20 years before retiring and was previously employed by J.K. Burton Construction and the City of Burlington. Since retirement, Aubrie has enjoyed playing golf and assisting with grounds-keeping at Quaker Creek Golf Course. He was an avid Tarheel fan and shared his enthusiasm with his "Breakfast Club" at McCray Grill. Mr. Underwood is survived by his wife of the home; devoted daughter, Kathy Underwood Lollis and her husband, Curt, of Wilmington; two brothers Daniel Marion Underwood and his wife, Sara, of Winston-Salem and Joseph Norris Underwood and his wife, Gene Ann, of Charlotte; and many loving nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Donald Harrison Underwood; and special sister-in-law, Florence "Flo" Whitehurst Underwood Balot. The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Monday, July 30, 2012 at Lakeview Community Church by Rev. Reid Dickens. Interment with military honors will follow at Union Ridge Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-6 Sunday afternoon at the church and other times at the residence. Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the Underwood family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lakeview Community Church, 101 Boone Rd., Burlington, NC 27217 or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Rd., Burlington, NC 27215. We, the family, extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Hospice caregivers and the loving support of family and friends.
