George Summers

George R. Summers, 77, of 6427 NC 61 North passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at Moses Cone Hospital following a brief illness. He was the husband of Mamie Byerly Summers and was born September 23, 1932 in Guilford County to the late J.H. and Lydia Shepherd Summers. George was a member of Friedens Lutheran Church and retired from the Guilford County Prison System. He was a volunteer fireman for twenty-two years at Station 28 and enjoyed farming and fishing. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Survivors include his wife of the home, daughters Denese Foster of Gibsonville, Wanda Robert Simpson of Altamahaw, grandchildren; James Matthew Whitted, Karen Renae Dudley, William Edward Whitted, great grandchildren; Jenna Grace Dudley, Jacob Gray Dudley, sisters; Mae Lewis of Gibsonville, Ruby Huffines of Burlington. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Willie "Bill" Summers and Vance "Jack" Summers. The graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Friday at Friedens Lutheran Church Cemetery by Rev. William Zima II. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Thursday at Friedens Lutheran Church and at other times at the home.
