George Draughn

George Harvey Draughn, 87, passed away Sunday, December 26, 2010 at Alamance Regional Medical Center. He was married for 68 years to Bertha Ida "Shorty" Key Draughn and was born September 25, 1923 in Surry County to the late Sidney Raymond and Maggie Jones Draughn. George had served in the Army Air Force during WW II serving with the 20th Bomber Command as an air traffic controller. He retired from Western Electric and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was of the Baptist faith and attended Grace Bible Fellowship. George enjoyed surf fishing and tinkering with small engines and repairing lawn mowers. Survivors include his wife of the home, sons; Kenneth W. Draughn, Keith L. Draughn both of Burlington, granddaughter Sara Jane Draughn, a brother Raymond Hollie Draughn of Matthews, sisters; Ruth Bledsoe of Mt. Airy, Lucille Wood, Nannie Lou Ray Kidd, Dorothy Rumley all of Dobson and numerouse nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Ralph Draughn and Kelly Draughn. The funeral will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Paul Waters, Rev. Alfred Furr, Jr. and Rev. Ken Harmon. Interment will follow in Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 5-7 PM Tuesday at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc and at other times at the home. The family would like to thank Hospice and their staff and a special thanks to Sheila, Evelyn Wanda and Vanessa.
