Greensboro Gene Tunney Phillips, 83, died Wednesday, August 31, 2011. He was born September 6, 1927 in Lee County to the late Adge Albert and Ollie Ward Phillips and was the husband of 64 years to Evelyn Conklin Phillips of the home. Gene served as Yeoman 1st Class in the US Coast Guard / Navy on USS Destroyer Escort, DE322 from May 1944 to 1945. He graduated from Bessemer High School and attended William and Mary. He was a Sunday School Teacher and Deacon at Rolling Roads Baptist Church in Greensboro. He was also a Civitan member and was the owner-operator of Right Way Tires in Greensboro. Gene was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. The love he and Evelyn shared was an inspiration to others. Survivors include his wife of the home, a son, retired MSgt Michael Gene Phillips and wife, Carol of Rock Hill, SC, a grandson Robert Michael Phillips and wife, Misty of San Diego, CA and a great grandson Griffin "Finn" Phillips. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters. A funeral service will be held 2:00pm, Saturday, September 3, 2011 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Ward Burch and music by Chip Holden. The burial will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:45pm-1:45pm prior to the service at the funeral home and other times at the home.
