Burlington, NC Mr. Gareth Lynwood Johnson, 69, of Burlington, passed away surrounded by his family at the Alamance-Caswell Hospice Home on Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at 11:45 a.m., after a courageous battle with Frontotemporal Dementia FTD. A native of Siler City and a 1961 Jordan Matthews High School graduate, he was preceded in death by his parents Norman M. Johnson and Christine Wright Johnson and is survived by his wife of 45 years, Donna S. Johnson. He graduated from NC State University in 1965 with a BS Degree in Textiles. Upon graduation, he began his textile management career with Burlington Industries and retired in the year 2000. From 1965 to 1971, he also served his country as a US Coast Guard Reservist. For the last twenty years, he was a faithful member of Burlington Assembly of God where he was a Sunday School teacher and choir member as well as an active participant in nursing home, prison and men's ministries. Gareth also enjoyed the outdoors and gardening; and after retirement, he became an avid "mall" walker. In addition to his wife, survivors include his son Keith and wife Angie of Greenville; son Craig of Rocky Mount; daughter Julie of the home; granddaughters Claire and Eliza-Grace; brother Ray and wife Phyllis of Snow Camp; brother-in-law Floyd Underwood and wife Terry of Burlington; sister-in-law JoAnna Goss of Concord; and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews. The memorial service will be conducted at Burlington Assembly of God on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. by the Reverend Howard Thompson, with visitation to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Burlington Assembly of God Missions Fund, 821 Tucker Street, Burlington, NC 27215, or the Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell, 918 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215. For the care given to Gareth and his family, special thanks are extended to Drs. Jeffrey Sparks and Nancy Phifer, the 2nd Floor staff at Alamance Regional Medical Center, and the staff of the Alamance-Caswell Hospice Home.
