Fred Albright Veteran, World War II, US Navy, Pacific Husband, Father, Granddaddy, Educator Fred Walter Albright, born June 1, 1922, in Albemarle, died March 27, 2008, at Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington. Fred is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Betsy Smith Albright; his parents Joseph and Ella Albright; his brother Clyde Albright; his sisters Evelyn Warren, Vara Goodman and Myrtis Albright. He is survived by his daughters Jane Albright of Raleigh, Suzanne Knight of Raleigh, and Tempy Albright of Winston-Salem; his sons-in-law, Vance Knight of Raleigh and Tripp Guthrie of Winston-Salem; and his sister, Dewey Mae Hartsell of Mt. Pleasant. He was very proud of his grandchildren, Matthew Welch of Washington, DC, and Elizabeth Welch of Austin, Texas. Fred served North Carolina public schools for 35 years in Alamance, Guilford and Randolph counties. For 29 years he was the principal of Randleman Elementary in Randleman. From 1956 to 1984, he met the challenges of chronic teacher and budget shortages and calmly led the school through desegregation. He also was an active member of the Raleigh Lions Club. After his retirement, he was elected to serve two terms on the Randleman Board of Aldermen. Fred was very active in his church, First United Methodist Church in Randleman, serving on the Administrative Board and flipping pancakes for the Methodist Men breakfasts. Since moving to Twin Lakes in 2001, he has been a loyal member of First United Methodist Church in Elon. His first love was family excelling as husband, father and granddaddy. His devotion to the needs of children can be summed in a line of his favorite poem: "I believe in children the fragile dream of yesterday, life's radiant reality today, and the vibrant stuff of tomorrow." Visitation will be held at First United Methodist Church of Elon on Monday, March 31, from 6 to 8 pm. The memorial service will be on Tuesday, April 1, at 11 am at the church.
