Frank Legrand Smith, Jr.

Frank Legrand Smith Jr, 91 of Burlington, NC, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at his home. He was affectionately known as Poppy, born in Covington, VA and raised in Charleston, SC. A proud 1949 graduate of Porter Military Academy, he went on to serve in the United States Airforce in the Korean War. Recipient of the UN Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Following discharge from the Airforce he entered Clemson University and graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. Following graduation, he was employed by McDonald Douglas Aircraft in St. Louis, MO then retired after 30 years of service with Western-Electric/AT&T. 

Frank was immensely dedicated to his family and took great pride in his grandchildren and all of their accomplishments. He loved fishing, a good cigar and his wallet was known as his file cabinet. He was master of using a slide rule and could repair anything with duct tape and epoxy glue. Unfortunately, this was one time he could not fix the problem. 

Frank was preceded in death by his father, Frank L. Smith Sr., mother, Ada Mae Isaacs Smith, brother, Larry Edward Smith and his beloved pup, Barron. He is survived by his wife, Carol G. Smith and by his children, Bruce L, Smith of Randleman, NC, Michael R. Smith of Trinity, NC and Susan E. Breedlove (Danny) of Randleman, NC. Grandchildren; Lauren Mullett (Stephen), Mark Breedlove (Andrea), William Duncan, Erin Hohn (Christian), Rebecca Smith (Robbie) and Julia Breedlove along with 12 great grandchildren. 

A graveside service will be held on Monday, March 13, 2023 at 2:000pm at Alamance Memorial Park. Military honors will be provided by the US Air Force honor guard. The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:45pm on Monday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory prior to the service.
