Laura Frances Carden Watts went home to be with her Lord and Savior on January 14th, 2017 after a 17-year battle with Alzheimer's. She was born January 28, 1933 in Hillsborough, NC to Molly Haymore Carden and George Crawford Carden, one of 13 children. She was preceded in death by her husband John (Jack) Wesley Watts and 10 of her brothers and sisters. She is survived by her daughter Deborah Watts Rice (Dan), Grandchildren Laura Rice Primm (Trey) and John Daniel Rice, three great grandchildren Debbie-Claire, Algernon Mark and Dan Charles Primm. She is also survived by two sisters, Mary Ellen Scarlett of Hillsborough and Alice Redman of Killeen, Texas and many nieces and nephews.
Frances was of the Baptist Faith and a member of Ossipee Baptist Church in Ossipee, NC. She was baptized as a young lady at West Hill Baptist Church in Hillsborough, NC. In recent years she attended the WhiteStone Chapel in Greensboro as long as her health would allow.
Frances retired from UNC-CH Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC. She and her husband Jack moved to Elon, NC in 1986 to retire closer to their grandchildren. They both enjoyed living out in the country and loved being close to their family.
For the last 11 years she has lived at WhiteStone, Masonic and Eastern Star Retirement Home in Greensboro. Even though she faced a constant decline because of Alzheimer's, she kept her spirit of joy, love and laughter to the very end.
The first years there she was able to play the piano and entertain the other residents. She enjoyed looking after those that needed help at WhiteStone and considered the other residents family.
In fact, Frances spent her entire life loving and taking care of other people. If you were around her for any length of time you probably benefited from her love, her caring, her generosity and especially her cooking. The birthday meals she cooked her family were amazing including thirteen layer cakes with chocolate all the way through.
She loved church and loved singing as long as she was able to do it. When she was young she enjoyed playing the piano in church services. She passed her love of music on to her daughter, grand daughter and even her great granddaughter. She could make a room come alive when she was at the piano. Her specialty was the old Boogie Woogie music that would get everyone moving.
We will all miss her "Love You" and pats on the hand when she was too weak or unable to speak. She loved cooking for everybody and spent her life doing for others and opening her home for people who needed a place to stay. She loved the poor in spirit and always tried to uplift people with a smile and with laughter.
Her life was a life well lived! She made it count by laughing and enjoying things as much as possible. Her life made a real difference to those that knew her well.
Frances volunteered for Meals on Wheels for many years and delivered meals to those shut in. She loved doing things for her church and for anyone in need. She became a Senior Citizen Cheerleader when she was in her 60s, she joined the Red Hat group from her church. She loved going on trips with her sisters and friends.
We would like to thank the staff at WhiteStone Retirement Home for their kindness, love and patience with Frances, especially during these last few months. We would also like to thank Hospice for making her final journey as peaceful and pain free as possible. Hospice has been called in two times previously for Frances, but she was full of life and bounced back each time. We also wanted to thank the Care and Compassion Team at St. Marks Church in Burlington for all the prayers and cards over the eleven years Frances was at WhiteStone. We also want to thank Grace Hill, her best friend and sister in Christ for being so loyal and so loving to Frances. We also want to thank the wonderful brothers and sisters at the Battle of Alamance, Order of the Eastern Star for their faithful prayers, gifts and cards.
