Gibsonville, NC Etta Jeanette Howerton Newton, age 70, passed away on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at the Hospice Home surrounded by her family. She was a native of Alamance County and the wife of 48 years to Darrell Dee Newton who survives. Etta was a middle school teacher for over 22 years completing her teaching career with the Alamance-Burlington School System. She was a graduate of Elon College receiving her BA in English. She was an avid quilter, enjoying baking and reading in her spare time. Etta was an accomplished pianist receiving national recognition and awards in her earlier years. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Survivors include her husband, Darrell Dee Newton of the home; daughter, Elizabeth Cohen and her husband, Nathan of Atlanta, Georgia; sons, Daniel Newton and his wife, Susan of Gibsonville and Richard Newton and his wife, Winnie of Harrisburg, NC; grandchildren, Gabriel, Chloe and Emily Newton; father, Garland Daniel Howerton of Gibsonville; sisters, Marcie Howerton of Graham, Carolyn Fitch and her husband, Gerald Doc of Gibsonville and Debbie Black and her husband, Charles of McLeansville; brother, Edker Howerton and his wife, Louise of Gibsonville; sister-in-law, Dorothy Dot Howerton of Gibsonville. She was preceded in death by her mother, Irene Troxler Howerton; sister, Gladys Marie Howerton and a brother, Garland Francis Buster Howerton. A service to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Richard Newton. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.
