Gibsonville – Ersul Earl “Ert” Sowers, 82, passed away Sunday morning, April 18, 2021 at his home, surrounded by his family.

He was born January 30, 1939 to the late Thomas and Susie Sowers in Kinston, NC.  At the age of 9, following the death of his parents, he grew up in Oxford, NC at the Oxford Orphanage.  He was a Navy Veteran of 24 years, serving on eight ships.  On November 13, 1964, he married Ginger Westhoff.  Ert retired from the Navy in 1980 and moved the family to Eden, NC to work at Miller Brewing Company.  Ert and Ginger then moved to Gibsonville, NC in 2015.

Ert is survived by his wife of the home, two children, Andrew Sowers and wife Darci of San Jose, CA and Susan Johnson and husband Miles of Franklinton, NC; four granddaughters, Abigail and Emily Sowers, Brylee and Amberly Johnson; two sisters, Violet Davenport of Durham, NC and Sue Shively of Erie, KS.  He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.

A mass of Christian burial will be held 11:00am on Friday, April 23, 2021 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Burlington, NC.  His burial with Military Honors will be held at a later date at Fort Scott National Cemetery in Kansas.
