Mr. Edwin “Mac” Frank McDaries, Sr., 79, of Burlington, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 16, 2023 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.
Mac was born November 11, 1943 in Washington, D.C. to the late Clarence Edward and Mary Louise McDaries. He served as a Burlington Firefighter, Lieutenant, and Station Captain for 31 years. After retiring from the BFD, he continued to work as an independent painting contractor with his crew of fellow firefighters. If Mac wasn’t fighting fires with a 1 3/4” hose and an axe or slinging oil paint on a baseboard, he was typically first on the water at Lake McIntosh throwing a Pop R or a Carolina rig; and if he wasn’t catching fish, he was either on the phone talking about fishing with his wide circle of friends, working in his perennial garden, or getting ready to go fishing. He was a member of Bethlehem Christian Church for 30+ years, holding various positions of stewardship within the church.
Mac is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Rebecca McDaries; sons, Edwin “Mac” McDaries, Jr. and wife Melinda, and Ronald McDaries and wife Bonnie; grandchildren, Ian McDaries and wife Kelsey, Caitlin Peek and husband Jordan, Christy Meredith and husband Thomas, and MacKenzie McDaries; great grandchildren, Lily Meredith, Harper Meredith, Palmer Peek, Mason McDaries, and Holly June Peek; a sister, Daisy Dianne Galla; and a “brother,” Fred Pack. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Patricia McDaries.
The funeral service to celebrate the life of Mac will be held at 3:00pm Thursday, July 20, 2023 at Bethlehem Christian Church with the burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7pm Wednesday, July 19, 2023 at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory.
In lieu of gifts or flowers, the family asks that donations be made, on Mac’s behalf, to the Burlington Fire Department Benefit Fund Association, 215 South Church Street, Burlington, NC 27215. You may send condolences to www.lowefuneralhome.com.
