A native of Montclair, NJ he was born December 17, 1926 to Joseph and Mary Trethaway. While attending Cornell University, Ned served a brief stint in the US Navy, and then the Army ROTC while completing college. He remained in the Army reserves until 1962, retiring as a Captain. After graduating from Cornell in 1949 in Engineering, he worked in business until 1963 at American Can Company Rochester, NY-where he met his wife of 61 years, "Pat", Western Electric, and Pausin Mfg. During his time at the Veterinary College his fundraising program entered, and won, a national award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education CASE, an honor of which he was very proud. In his early 40's he designed, patented, and manufactured a new improved fiberglass chair for handicapped folks called the "Handi-Chair", inspired by what was then available for their handicapped son, Brent.
