Dr. Johnson

Burlington, NC Dr. Leslie Donald "Don" Johnson, age 67, passed away on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at The Village at Brookwood in the Skilled Nursing unit. He was a native of Hope Mills and the husband of 22 years to Barbara Ackerman Johnson who survives. Dr. Johnson retired from Burlington Radiological as a Diagnostic Radiologist. He served as a Captain in the US Army Reserve for many years. Don graduated from Walter Williams High School in 1960 and upon graduation entered Elon College where he received a BA in Philosophy in 1965. Dr. Johnson received a Western Electric Scholarship while attending Elon College, now Elon University, and held the scholarship provided by the Alamance-Caswell Medical Auxiliary. He was an honor student throughout his four years at Elon and was a member of the Order of the Oak, an academic honor society there. He received a Reynolds Scholarship, part of a program sponsored by the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, which provided for expenses during his 4 years of medical study and supplemented his scholar's internship salary during his 5th year of medical education to provide him an income for that year. He was selected by the medical school's committee on admissions on the basis of character, scholarship, potential as a physician, and financial need. Don completed his medical degree at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University in 1969. Survivors include his wife of the home, Barbara Ackerman Johnson; daughter, Leslie Celeste Johnson of Burlington; brothers, Robert Angus Johnson and Myron Douglas Johnson both of Summerville, SC and a first cousin, William Daniel "Billy" Evans of Burlington. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie Daniel and Dorothy Warwick Johnson and an aunt, Eula Belle Evans. The funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. J. Earl Danieley. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home and from 9:45 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. on Saturday prior to the service and other times at the home.
