Dr. E.C. "George" Garlick, 89, of The Village at Brookwood died on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at Edgewood Place after several months of declining health. George was born June 16, 1924 in Roaring Spring, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Roaring Spring High School as class president with 12 years of perfect attendance. He was educated at Catawba College, Salisbury, N.C., graduating in 1949 with dual degrees in chemistry and biology. While there, he played scholarship basketball and football and played in the first two Tangerine Bowls in 1947 and 1948. George continued his education, receiving his doctorate of veterinary medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School. Dr. Garlick served as Corporal in the United States Marine Corps during World War II from 1942-1946 in the Asian Pacific theatres. He was also in the U.S. Navy as an Aviation cadet and retired as a First Lieutenant in the Army Veterinary Corps. George was married to the late Betty Deal Garlick of Kannapolis, N.C. in 1950. He returned to Kannapolis and established South Ridge Veterinary Clinic where he treated both large and small animals. After selling his practice, he worked as an inspector for the United States Department of Agriculture. While living in Kannapolis, Dr. Garlick was a founding member of First Charter Bank of Concord: co-founder and initial board member of Cabarrus Academy now the Cannon school; and a member of the following boards: Boy Scouts, Kannapolis area; Rotary Club of Kannapolis and Citizens Bank of Concord. He was President of the Parent-Teachers Association of A.L. Brown High School, Kannapolis, N.C. In addition to his wife, Betty Garlick, George was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Earl Garlick and Edna Smith Garlick; sisters, Maxine Garlick Huntsman and Ivadene Garlick Bailey and a brother, Earl Dale Garlick. Left to cherish George's memory are son, George Michael Garlick Teresa of Summerfield, N.C.; daughter, Nancy Garlick Hemric Clay of Burlington, N.C.; three grandchildren, Stephen Garlick Addison, Alexander Garlick and Zachary Garlick. Also surviving is a brother, Leo Garlick of Pequannock, New Jersey. George lived in Elon and Burlington for 10 years and was a member of First Reformed United Church of Christ of Burlington. The family is most appreciative of his doctors, Dr. Mark Miller and Dr. Bryan Cope and his many caregivers at The Village at Brookwood and Hospice of Alamance-Caswell. A funeral service will be held at First Reformed United Church of Christ on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Dr. Garlick will lie in state in the sanctuary prior to the service. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall and at other times at 2419 Pineway Drive, Burlington, N.C. A cryptside service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday in the Mausoleum Chapel at Carolina Memorial Park of Concord, N.C.
