Dr. Benny Bryant Hampton

Dr. Benny Bryant Hampton was received into heavenly fellowship with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, January 21, 2024. He spent his last days surrounded by family and friends and leaves a legacy of faith, loyalty, and service to his God, his family, and his community. He considered his greatest accomplishment to be his role in instilling his Christian faith in his children and grandchildren.  He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Peggy Carter Hampton, his three children, Lisa Hampton, Lori Hurley (Randy), and Bryant Hampton (Carri), all of Asheboro as well as five grandchildren, Carter Hurley, Ellis Hurley, Luke Hurley, Amber Hampton, and Alyssa Hampton. He is also survived by his brother Terry Hampton (Annis) of Elkin, five nieces and a nephew, six great nieces and four great nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Wade Bryant Hampton and Dovie Katherine Coe Hampton, his brother Dwayne Coe Hampton and sister-in-law Ann Park Hampton.

Benny was born on December 31, 1940 in Surry County, North Carolina. He was a graduate of Elkin High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from NC State College followed by a Master’s Degree and Doctorate in Education from NC State University. He was a lifelong educator with a love of learning and teaching and a deep appreciation for the rural North Carolina farm lifestyle that shaped him. He began his career in education by teaching agricultural education at Western Alamance High School near Elon, NC where he met Peggy. After three years as a high school educator he moved to Asheboro and joined the North Carolina Community College System as an instructor at what is now Randolph Community College. During his 18 years at Randolph Community College he progressed to administrative positions, ultimately serving as Dean of Continuing Education. In 1984 he relocated to Montgomery Community College and served as President there until 1992. After his tenure in the Community College System he embraced a second career as managing partner of Montgomery Farm and Garden, where he combined his agricultural background and his talent for education by sharing his knowledge of farming, gardening, animals, and Case knives with his community, customers, and employees.  

Benny was a faithful Christian and an active member of several churches during his lifetime. After he and his family moved to Troy he joined Troy First Baptist Church where he served in various leadership roles including deacon, trustee, Sunday School teacher, and choir member. He was also involved in many community organizations including the Montgomery County Farm Bureau, the Voluntary Agricultural District Committee, the Montgomery Community College Board of Directors, and the Troy Merchants Association. He was honored to be named as a Case Ambassador by W. R. Case and Sons Cutlery in recognition of his knowledge of Case knives and his representation of their products in his community.  

The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 27, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Troy, 401 E. Main St., Troy, NC.  A Funeral Service will begin at 3:00 PM with the Rev. Ed Lowder and Pastor Nick Allen officiating.  Burial will be on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at 1:30 PM at the Hampton Family Cemetery, Elkin, NC.  Pastor Matty Ponce-de-Leon will be officiating.  

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Montgomery Community College Foundation at 1011 Page Street, Troy NC 27371 designated for the Dr. Benny Bryant Hampton Scholarship Endowment or to Troy First Baptist Church at 401 East Main Street, Troy NC 27371 designated to the Youth or Scholarship funds.
