Dorothy H. Smith, of 80 years, was peacefully welcomed into Heaven on Saturday, May 18, 2019. Born in Rahway, NJ on March 3, 1939 to the late Ted and Marion Bara, Dorothy was happily married to the late Allen Smith. Their loving bond of 39 years graciously blessed family and friends and continues to serve as a reminder for how extraordinary life can be.
Dorothy did not shy from thinking out loud, and it certainly did not stop her from making warm, joyful memories with her loved ones. Her mind was sharp and extremely organized, as every piece of paper had its place and can be recalled from memory without hesitation. With her home and heart always open, guests of the Smith family would be sure to find photos of themselves on the mantel or on the fridge. Between the snapshots of these memories, her pastime for ceramics lives on through her collection of Disney knick-knacks. Dorothy dressed to her personality regardless of occasion - full patriot wardrobe in support of our country, and extra jackets to bundle up with no matter the season.
Before retiring to North Carolina, Dorothy enjoyed family day trips to Keansburg Beach, NJ where she’d often visit Old Heidleberg for their famous hot dogs. As a spiritual person and longtime member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Dorothy was an active Columbiette and Professed Franciscan. Her deep relationship with The Lord guided her along her journey and to welcome everlasting life.
Dorothy is survived by her son, Kevin Powers, and his wife Delores; granddaughter Lisa Bohl and great grandson Joshua; brother “Butchie” Bara; sisters Carol Narcavage and Sophie Benzinger, with her daughter Viola and her three children; and loving extended family of nieces and nephews. She was preceded by her husband, parents, and sister, “Sweetie” Cannata.
For as long as Dorothy and Allen resided in New Jersey, they opened up their home to family and friends to celebrate many holidays, including Memorial Day. On this Memorial Day weekend, family and friends are invited to attend the viewing on Sunday, May 26, 2019 from 3-6pm at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory. A funeral mass to celebrate Dorothy’s life and continued journey will be held 11am on Monday, May 27, 2019 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with burial to follow at Gibsonville City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Dorothy Smith to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Rd., Burlington, NC 27217.
