Burlington Dorothy Porter Simpson, 78, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2014 at the Hospice Home after one year of declining health. She was born in Alamance County to the late Melvin Seth Thomas Porter and the late Emma Poole Porter and was married to the late John Wilson Simpson who died in 1985. Dorothy was a homemaker and a member of the First Reformed United Church of Christ. She was a former female vocalist in the Blazers Country Music Band. Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Donald Byrd, Patty and Rick Filyaw all of Burlington, Lisa and Steve Myers of Pelham; 11 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Grady Starling of Burlington; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents; grandson, Johnny Rushing; brothers, Frank, Pearl, Paul, Odell, Ollie, Grady and Dollie Porter; sisters, Rachel Wilson and Myrtle Starling. The funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Phil Myers with burial to follow in Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:45pm Wednesday with a reception prior to the service. At other times the family will be at the home. The Simpson family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at the Home Place of Burlington, Alamance Regional Medical Center and to the Hospice Home for all their loving care and compassion that was showed to them and to their mother.
