Donald Virgil McLeod, 65, of 1211 Rockwood Ave., died Saturday, January 21, 2006 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. A native of Lee County, he was the son of the late Malcom Archibald McLeod, Jr. and Mrs. Virginia Noell McLeod, who survives, and was married to Mrs. Helen McLeod, who survives. Mr. McLeod was a 1958 graduate of Sanford Central High School and in 1957 and 1958 he won the North Carolina Spanish contest, which earned him a scholarship to UNC Chapel Hill. He graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a degree in Romance Languages and earned his masters degree from UNC Greensboro in Spanish. Early in his career he traveled and taught English as a second language in Latin American countries. He later continued his teaching career at Western Alamance High School and Elon University. Virgil was a member of Westover Church in Greensboro. He is survived by his wife, Helen McLeod of the home; daughter, Silvia McLeod of Lynchburg, VA; mother, Virginia Noell McLeod of Sanford; sister, Jenny Lou McLeod of Sanford; and brother, Malcolm Noell McLeod and his wife Vickie of Chapel Hill. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday, January 24, 2006 at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Monday evening at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory.
