Dexter Austin

Burlington-Dexter Parker Austin, 100, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at his home surrounded by his family. He was a native of Caswell County and the husband of 72 years to the late Margaret Coble Austin.

Dexter was a brick mason before working in textiles at McEwen and later retiring from Tower Hosiery Mills. He was a US Army veteran of World War II serving with the 5th Armored Division seeing combat in the Ardennes and Rhineland.  Dexter was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and his Christian faith was the foundation of his life. Dexter grew up working on family farms, hunting, playing softball and baseball, and he won many trophies. He also was an excellent horseshoe player. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and great great grandfather.

Survivors include his daughters, Becky Mansfield and husband, Jack and June Campbell and husband, Richard both of Burlington; grandchildren, Morisha (Lynn) Stout, Tim Austin, Jennifer (Len) Seigel, Pam (Tony) Henderson, Neil Mansfield, Leslie (Jeremy) Vuncannon and Lee Campbell; great grandchildren, Phillip Austin, Landon McCurdy, Chace Henderson, Ciara Henderson, Brennan Mansfield, Greyson Mansfield, Ryan and Taylor Vuncannon  and Jennifer (Derek) VanSickle;  great great grandchildren, Cora and Crosby VanSickle; brother, Leon Austin of Jacksonville, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his wife, son, Howard Basil Austin; parents, James and Effie Cobb Austin; sisters, Rosie Wrenn, Hazel Longest, Jo Ann McGuire and Luzine Johnson; brothers, Ed Austin, Norman Austin and Claude Austin.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance/Caswell for their kind and compassionate care of Dexter.

A service to celebrate his life will be held on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at 2:00 PM at New Hope Baptist Church by Rev. Randy Hobbs. The burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park with military honors by the US Army. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Tuesday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at the home.
