Dewey Wade Greeson, 87, of Julian passed on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at Moses Cone Hospital. He was born in Guilford County and was the son of the late Oscar Carme Greeson and Ada Ruth Clapp Greeson. He was married for 62 years to Velna Jean Jones Greeson who survives.
Dewey was a U.S. Army veteran who was stationed in Germany serving during the Korean War in the 245th Tank Battalion 2nd Armored Division also known as "Hell on Wheels" and in the 67th Armored Regiment driving the M-21 Stridsvagn and M-24 Chaffee light tanks.
He retired as an electrician with Guilford County Maintenance Division and later worked at Walnut Wood Golf Course. Mr. Greeson was a lifelong member of Mt. Hope United Church of Christ and a member of the Gleaner's Sunday School Class. He was a charter member of Mt. Hope Community Fire Department serving as a volunteer firefighter, member of the board of directors and Fire Commissioner. His hobbies included quail hunting, coaching Little League baseball, golf and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Velna Jean Jones Greeson; sons, Byron (Kristen) Greeson and Neal (Lynn) Greeson; grandsons, Dalton, Wade and Joshua; sister, Helen Busick; sister-in-law, Emma Jean Greeson and brother-in-law, L.B. Friddle. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Modine Friddle and brothers, Wayne, Homer and Harold Greeson.
The funeral will be held at 2:00 PM Friday at Mt. Hope United Church of Christ by Rev. Kristin Gerner Vaughn and Rev. Lynne Hinton with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Thursday evening at Mt. Hope U.C.C.
