Burlington, NC Delbert "Del" John Tickel, age 84, passed away at his home on Thursday, January 5, 2012 surrounded by his family. Del was born on December 18, 1927 in Montgomery County, Ohio to Edgar Joseph Tickel and his wife, Helen Irene Urschel Tickel. He was the husband of 58 years to Jeanette Chester Tickel who survives. Del was a veteran of the US Army serving in Texas and Japan as part of the occupational forces at the end of WW II. He graduated with honors from General Motors Institute now Kettering University in Flint, Michigan. Del retried as an Industrial Engineer serving in various capacities during his working career. Del enjoyed golfing and was an avid fisherman. His family has many fond memories of mushroom hunting at Iron Mountain, Michigan which was a favorite family tradition. Del will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Loved ones he leaves behind include his wife of 58 years, Jeanette Chester Tickel of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Virginia Tickel and Marvin Underwood of Winston-Salem, NC; son and daughter-in-law, Michael John and Martha Hiller Tickel of Westerville, Ohio; son, Steven Douglas Tickel of the home; grandchildren, Scott Underwood, James Underwood, Kelly Sink, Lisa Tickel, James Tickel and Joseph Tickel; two step granddaughters, Julie Stevens and Kristi Gray; three great grandchildren, Dylan, Christian and Noah; sister, Janet Tickel Sauter of Dayton, Ohio and he enjoyed a lifelong friendship with Robert and Barbara Zimmerman of Dayton, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Alma Louise Miller of Dayton, Ohio and a brother, Marvin Edgar Tickel also of Dayton, Ohio. A service to celebrate his life will be held on Monday, January 9, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Alamance Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel by Rev. Stephen C. Rust. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. on Sunday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at the home. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.
