Dayton Proffit, 92, passed away on Thursday, February 9, 2017 at the Hospice Home. Mr. Proffit was born June 6, 1924 in Watauga County, NC to the late William Henry and Emma Thomas Proffit.
Dayton considered it a privilege to serve God, his country, his family and his church. He was a World War II veteran having served in the Army-Air Force. Dayton enjoyed farming and worked for many years as the manager of Acme Farm in Elon, NC. When he was able, he attended church faithfully and often served as a Sunday School teacher, deacon, and elder.
Dayton is survived by his children: Dale (Linda) Proffit, Wilma Proffit, Donna (John) Miller, and Bill (Lisa) Proffit; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters Harlene (Douglas) Garner and Olive (Robert) Norris; three sisters-in-law Beulah (Cicero) Proffit, June (Fred) Proffit, and Patricia (William Henry) Proffit; a brother-in-law, Rev. Woodrow Winebarger and many nieces and nephews.
Dayton was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 41 years, Dorothy Miller Proffit; a grandchild, Brian Proffit; four brothers: Arlie (Gertrude), Cicero, Fred, and William Henry; and three sisters: Juanita (Lynch) Hamby, Geneva Winebarger, and Pearl (Bryan) Greer.
The family would like to say a very special "thank you" to several individuals. First, to the physicians and staff at the James H. Quillian VA Medical Center in Mt. Home, Tennessee and the physicians and staff at the Durham VA Medical Center in Durham, NC for many years of outstanding medical care for Dayton. In recent years, the kind and considerate care provided by the Home Based Primary Care Team at the Durham VAMC has been much appreciated by Dayton and his family: Thank you Dr. Stein, Linda, David, Kathryn, and Turquious.
Also, a very special "thank you" is extended to the physicians and staff at the Hospice & Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell for the loving care given to Dayton at the end of his life.
In addition, the family would like to express gratitude to several pastors and their families for their friendship, spiritual guidance, and comfort during the course of Dayton's life: Rev. and Mrs. L.V. Pierce, Rev. and Mrs. W.W. Winebarger, Rev. and Mrs. Howard Thompson, Dr. and Mrs. James Gardner, and Rev. and Mrs. Darrell Cox.
Finally, a special "thank you" to family, friends, and neighbors of the Meat Camp community who visited and cared for Dayton for several years. And, a special thanks and appreciation to Mr. & Mrs. Gary Proffit and Mr. & Mrs. Wayne Winebarger for your many acts of Christian love and kindness.
The funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Darrell Cox, Rev. Howard Thompson, Rev. Roger Barefoot and Rev. David Grinnell. Interment will follow in Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:45-2:45 Sunday prior to the service at the funeral home.
