David “Gene” Eugene Stewart, Sr., 81, passed away on Sunday, September 22, 2019 at the Beacon Place surrounded by his family. He was born in Guilford County on June 20, 1938 to the late William Harvey Stewart and Rosa Lilian Bolen Stewart and was married to the late Peggy Sue May Stewart who died in 2018 after 58 years.
Gene was a 20-year veteran of the US Marine Corps, with two tours in Vietnam. He was awarded numerous metals which include, combat Action Metal, Presidential Unit Citation, Armed Forces Expeditary Metal, Vietnam Service Metal with 4 Stars and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm. He also retired from Brewer Equipment Company in Greensboro after 40 years of service. Gene was an avid golfer and enjoyed cooking for family and friends.
He is survived by his sons, David Eugene Stewart, Jr. and wife Beverly and Victor Ken Stewart; a daughter, Melinda Stewart Lechner and husband, Ron; his grandsons that he adored, Ben Stewart, Nick (Lauren) Stewart, Adam (Sarah) Hall, Bryan (Kellie) Caudle and Kyle (Kaitlyn) Lechner; great grandchildren , Eli Caudle, Micah Hall, Gabby Hall, Candace Hall, Lawson Stewart, Norah Stewart and Jonas Lechner; a sister, Jane Bates and husband John; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; and siblings, Mary McMillian, Betty Johnson, Faye Arnett, Kay Henderson, Ray Stewart, Wayne Stewart, Jerry Stewart and Robert “Bobby” Stewart.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00pm Wednesday, September 25, 2019 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Michael Barnette with the burial to follow at Alamance Memorial Park with military honors. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8pm Tuesday at the funeral home and other times at David and Beverly’s home.
The family would like to express their gratitude to all the hospice nurses, family members and dear friends for all of their support, prayers and thoughtfulness during Gene’s illness.
