David Walker

David Andrew Walker, 74, passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2020 at Alamance Regional Medical Center surrounded by his family.  He was born in Alamance County on August 2, 1946 to the late Clark Andrew Walker and Margaret Ruth Stewart Clapp.

David grew up on a farm in Southeastern Guilford County. The oldest of six siblings, he became the “man in charge” while Daddy worked second shift in the mill. There were animals to be cared for, cows to be milked and crops to be tended including tobacco.

With 104 acres to roam there was also time to play, woods and creeks to explore and adventures to be had. David kept the younger ones safe, rescuing them from harm no doubt many times. Once however, while David was stacking hay in the top of the barn the barn collapsed on him and David was buried by bales of hay. This time it was his brothers and sisters that saved him.

David attended Nathaniel Greene and Southeastern Guilford High School when it opened in 1962. The family then moved to Gibsonville where he met his wife Cynthia and their son Johnny was born.

In the 1980s he moved his family to Houston, Texas and started his business with one truck. When they moved back to NC he built his business here and became owner-operator of Walker Demolition Clearing and Grading.

David was very smart and knew how to do almost anything with machinery from operating to completely rebuilding engines. David was humble, soft spoken and never tuned down a request for help. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors other than his wife, Cynthia Walker include a son, Johnny Walker; grandchildren, Skylar, Adam and Justin Kerr; siblings, Bonnie W. Land (Charles), Mary C. Godwin (Earl) and Harry E. Clapp; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and his canine companion, Sock’s.  He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Kevin Clapp and Raymond “Ray” Clapp, Jr.; and nephews, Shane Davis and Chris Clapp.

A private service to celebrate David’s life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Humane Society, HSAC, P.O. Box 5117 Burlington, NC 27216, hsacinfo@gmail.com.
