David Poteat, Sr.

David James "Toot" Poteat, Sr., 101 years old, passed away on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at Alamance Healthcare Center surrounded by his family. He was born in Caswell County to the late Lenzie Poteat and Cora Goods Poteat. "Toot" was the husband to the late Thelma Inez Willis Poteat; they were married in November of 1939 and were married for 73 years when she died in 2012. "Toot" worked as the Gant's Butler for many years, was a farmer and formerly worked with the Alamance Community Service Transportation. He was a member of Allen's Chapel, a deacon and was the oldest church member. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, David "Junebug" and Brenda Poteat, Jr. of Haw River; daughters, Shirley Ross of Washington, DC, Cora Mae McCoy, Bertha Thompson and Vanessa Dale Poteat all of Burlington; 12 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, sons, Cleaonzy Poteat, Jessie Donnell Poteat and Jimmie Lewis Poteat; grandsons, Anthony Poteat and Davian Daye; brothers, Robert "Mutt" Poteat and Willie "Goat" Poteat; sisters, Katie Womack and Elizabeth "Sis" Pulliam. The funeral service will be held 2:00pm Friday, June 26, 2015 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Rev. Tim Blackwell and the eulogy by Rev. James Brown . The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday and other times at the daughter, Cora Mae McCoy's home. The public viewing will be held on Thursday from 11am to 5pm at Lowe Funeral Home. The family will have a private inurnment at a later date.
