Darrell "Chief" Small

Burlington-Darrell Gene “Chief” Small, 88, went home to be with the lord on Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at the Homeplace surrounded by his family. He was a native of Alamance County and the husband of 65 years to the late Margaret Elizabeth Allen Small.

Darrell retired after 40 years with the Burlington Fire Department and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Elon. He was a graduate of the 1949 class of Burlington High School where he earned All-American Football honors.  He was also an avid Duke fan and an accomplished Golden Glove Boxer with an impressive 62-1 record. Darrell was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

Survivors include his sons, Steve Small and wife, Angela, Tim Small and his wife, Christal and Chris Small and wife, Dottie; daughter, Julie Bray; grandchildren, Terri Britt and husband, Steve, Russ Bray, Adam Bray, Nate Small and Jack Small and a great granddaughter, Gracie Britt;. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, Howard Taft Small and Rosa Self Hayes; brother, Bennie Small and brother-in-law, Dr. Don Allen.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00am on Friday, February 22, 2019 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Randy Hobbs with the burial to follow at Pine Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Thursday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at his residence.
