Darrell Duane Kirkman, age 56, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 22, 2014. He was a native of Guilford County and the husband of Cynthia Aborot Kirkman who survives. Darrell was the owner and operator for over 20 years of Lamplight Loving Care. He wanted to be remembered as a dedicated teacher. Darrell loved teaching so much and was always proud to introduce himself as a retired teacher, he taught for 25 years. In 1992, he was nominated for a Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching, a National Science Foundation Awards Program, while he was in Campbell court Elementary School Basset, Virginia. He retired from teaching with the Alamance Burlington School System after previously teaching in Kentucky and Virginia. Darrel was a member of West Burlington Church of God where he served as a Sunday School teacher and on the Benevolence Committee. He held various offices in the church over the years. Darrell had a big heart for children. He generously supported charities for kids. The Operation Christmas Child Samaritan's Purse. The World Vision and the Church of God Children's Home to name a few. He is also fondly called the Foodman as his Abundant Life Enterprise Business sponsors the Summer Food Service Program of the government, delivering some 4000 meals a day to kids from different sites during the summer. Darrell has been doing it for 9 years now. Darrell was a giving and generous person helping anyone in need. He touched many people's lives, children or adult. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Aborot Kirkman of the home; daughter, Angela Kirkman Holt and her husband Paul, of East Bernstadt, Kentucky; grandchildren, Hannah and Sarah Holt; mother, Pattie Sue May Way of Burlington; special Uncle Charles G. May, Jr. of Burlington; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Sharon Kaye Smith Kirkman and a sister, Hope Lynette Kinley A service to celebrate his life will be held on Friday, July 25, 2014 at 11:00 am at West Burlington Church of God by Pastor Olin Tatum and the burial will follow at Midway Cemetery in McLeasnville. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Thursday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at the home.
