Darleen M. Shaffer, age 93, went to her Lord on January 28, 2020 where she joined her dear husband, Glen.
Darleen was born on February 21, 1926 to John “Frank” and Helen Felker, the youngest of their four children. Her brothers, Bob and Harry predeceased her. She is survived by her loving sister, Mary Louise Felker Bandy, who resides in Nashville, Tennessee; as well as sons Tom (wife Pat) of Lancaster, California, Lee (wife Melanie) of Orlando, Florida, and Karl (wife Kathy) of Pittsboro, N.C., granddaughters Kristin Shaffer and Lisbeth Vavalo (husband John), and great-granddaughters Jade and Ava Vavalo.
Darleen was raised in Tamaqua, PA. After high school, she and her sister, Mary, attended the Reading Hospital School of Nursing, Reading, PA, and became RN’s together. Her love of people and her compassion showed in her work, but above all, in her family and friends. Darleen, as well as her late husband, Glen, were the most loving and compassionate people in the world. They generously gave of their time and finances over many years by serving senior citizens, their home church, and various civic organizations. Darleen and Glen loved the outdoors, engaging in camping, hiking, gardening, and canoeing in their leisure time. They visited many of the national parks throughout the U.S.
In 2009, they moved to Twin Lakes which became their new home. They became involved in many activities in the Twin Lakes Community. They loved their new community, and in turn, their new community loved them. They became members of Friedens Lutheran Church in Gibsonville.
The family of Darleen and Glen Shaffer wish to express their deepest gratitude to all of the Twin Lakes staff for the loving care and support over the years. Memorials in honor of Darleen and Glen Shaffer may be made to the Twin Lakes Resident Assistance Fund (Twin Lakes Community, 3701 Wade Coble Drive, Burlington, NC 27215) or Friedens Lutheran Church (6001 NC Hwy. 61N, Gibsonville, NC 27249).
