HAPPY AS A LARK

Dan Cubino left this life behind on Monday, October 4th, 2021 and immediately began his new one, full of resounding joy, everlasting peace and redeeming love with his Savior.

It’s been jokingly said that God broke the mold after Dan was born to the late Robert Cubino, SR. and Olga Rodriguez on January 25th, 1956 in Ybor City, Florida.

Dan’s personality and sense of humor grew through the years in increasingly hilarious and creative ways. You would be hard-pressed to find someone who hadn’t been involved with or was the recipient of one of Dan's mischievous, well-intentioned pranks.

Whether you were the unsuspecting librarian charged with capturing dozens of chameleon-type lizards, mysteriously released within the library’s laden bookshelves or a close friend on the receiving end of an irreverent barnyard animal hoisted through a dormitory window, free to roam with abandon through the halls. His sense of humor was legendary.

Although Dan’s life began years earlier, it could be said that it truly started when he met Doretta, his best friend & soulmate, in the lunch line at Liberty University. Their love grew through sweet gestures (like letters mailed in McDonald’s apple pie sleeves) and in spite of one death-defying, Evel Knievel-type motorcycle launch After a proposal made from a public phone booth, they shared 41 years of joyful laughter, tears, dances in the kitchen and millions of prayers.

Together, they loved serving others and felt called to pour into young adults.They filled their years together with drama ministries, counseling, mentoring and Bible studies.

Dan loved his family deeply and took the responsibility of parenting his four children seriously. His work ethic was unmatched, he almost never took a day off, but even in those rare occasions, he was always ready to step in and assist someone in need. He worked countless hours of overtime to support his family. Still, he never missed a ball game, an art show, a play or a dance recital. He never missed an anniversary or failed to send flowers to Doretta on her birthday.

His own family--mother, father, brother, grandmother and aunts was small in comparison to the  family he built, not only in his own household, but in his community.

His decades in law enforcement were marked with honor, pride and dignity. It’s almost impossible to walk the streets of Burlington without crossing paths with someone whose life was touched, made better by Dan Cubino. His years with the Burlington Police Department, the D.A.R.E. program, SRO, Junior Police Academy, COPS program, the Family Justice Center  and later with the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office with ICE, in Green Level, and at DSS---were not simply years building an amazing career; they were years invested in people. Crying for those he came in contact with, sharing in their struggles, shedding tears for their heartaches and praying countless prayers over friends and strangers alike.

Dan never missed an opportunity to share the redeeming love of Christ. It was his duty and his mission. He was overjoyed to serve his congregation at Hopedale Church, not only on Sundays and Wednesday nights, but each and every day. He served them for almost 6 years with the same devotion and love as his own family, because that’s what they were. Dan felt that it was his highest calling; he felt that it was such an honor and privilege to be a part of their lives, to share in their joys and sorrows and to be a witness to each of their journeys with the Lord.

His legacy of integrity, kindness, dignity and love will live on in each of us.

Dan is survived by his beloved wife, Doretta, their children, Dana & Brian Ogle, Bethany & Nicholas Rice, Jaime & Mo Williamson and Jordan & Emilie Cubino, along with their grandchildren Evelyn & Gabriel Cubino and Avery Ogle. Survivors also include his dear aunt, Gardenia Lara and cousins, nieces and nephews whom he loved very much.

Visitation for Dan Cubino will be held Friday, October 8th, 2021 from 5pm-7pm at Lowe Funeral Home, 2205 S. Church Street, Burlington and the celebration service will be held

Saturday, October 9th, 2021 at 2:00 pm at Antioch Community Church, 1600 Power Line Rd. Elon, followed by a graveside service at Alamance Memorial Park.
