Daisy Wicker Hursey Brookbank, age 95, of 118 Alamance Rd. formerly of Gibsonville passed away Monday, May 30, 2011 at The Homeplace of Burlington. A native of Guilford County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Robert and Elizabeth Michael Wicker. She was first married to the late Sylvester Hassel Hursey and following his death was married to the late Bill Brookbank. At the age of 16, she opened a dress shop on Worth St. in Burlington. She was co-founder of Hurseys Barbecue, and she later opened The Coffee Shop in downtown Burlington and a clothing outlet store in Gibsonville. She was a member of the Gibsonville Christian Church, the Ladies Sunday School Class and a former member of the Gibsonville Planning Board. Daisy enjoyed crocheting, ceramics, traveling, was an excellent cook and had a green thumb when it came to her garden. Daisy had an especially close bond with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren who were with her when she passed away. Survivors include her sons,, Charles Hursey and wife Ellen of Elon and Larry Hursey of Stoney Creek Whitsett; step son, Ronnie Brookbank and wife Sharon of Snow Camp; 5 grandchildren, Kent Hursey and wife Colleen, Chuck Hursey and wife Shelly, Chris Hursey and wife Jessica, Carey Apple and husband Davie and Lorri Williams; 5 step grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 7 step great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild; special nieces, Vivian May, Bernice Emmons, and Nancy Polk. She was preceded in death by her husbands; parents; step son, Donald Hursey; sister, Alma Haney Behrens; and brother, Jesse V. Wicker. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Thursday, June 2, 2011 at the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Allen Kent and Rev. Daniel Jennings. Interment will follow in Alamance Memorial Park. Mrs. Brookbank will remain at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory through the funeral service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8pm Wednesday and at other times the home of Charles and Ellen Hursey; 2443 Barber Rd., Elon. The family would like to express their gratitude for the special care given Daisy by the staff of The Homeplace and Amedisys Hospice.
