Colene W. Yarbrough of Burlington, died at 8:15 a.m., February 29, 2012, after three weeks of failing health at the Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell. She was born in Caswell County on January 17, 1931. She was the daughter of the late Charles Dewey Whitfield and Irene Tatum Whitfield. Mrs. Yarbrough worked and retired from Western Electric/AT&T, and was a member of their Golden Nuggets. She was of the Methodist faith and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elon where she served as past president and officer of the Wesleyan Sunday School class. She was also president of Happy Morning Club for many years and was voted as a special life member among the Methodist Women for her work in missions. She held an office in the District chapter, was the circle #2 leader and was a senior member, coordinator. She was also a member of TOPS group #109 where she was secretary, a past queen and earned and maintained her KOPS title. She was a volunteer at ARMC since 1998. In addition to her parents, Colene was preceded in death by her husband, Reuben L. Yarbrough; her sister Dorothy Gainous and her granddaughter, Jennifer Messel. Survivors include her daughters, Ruby Y. Capps, Becky Y. Simmons and husband Randy, and her son Phillip Ray Yarbrough, all residents of Alamance County. She is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law of Burlington, Broadie Millard and Shirley Whitfield; a sister, Edith Isabelle Chance of Lynchburg, VA and a brother-in-law, Floyd Gainous of Wilmington, NC; five grandchildren, Treniss Capps of Columbia, SC, Tabitha Holt of Haw River, NC, Matthew Simmons of Mebane, NC, Phillip Ray Yarbrough, Jr. of SC and Dalton Yarbrough of Burlington; five great grandchildren, and seven nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a special life long friend, Howard Webster of Elon. Visitation will be at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, March 2, 2012. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church of Elon by Rev. Terry Huffines. Entombment will follow at the Alamance Memorial Park Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Elon, 1630 Westbrook Ave, Elon, NC 27244, or Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Rd, Burlington, NC 27215.
