Mr. Clinton Wayne York, Sr. age 95, of Burlington, passed away at his residence on Saturday, November 23, 2024 after a short illness.
Born in High Point, NC, he was the son of the late Enos Lawton York and the late Luna May Brown York. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Wayne graduated in 1952 from Appalachian State University, where he was inducted into the Wrestling Hall of Fame, and the Wrestling team locker room is named in his honor. He then attended graduate school at the University of Tennessee, where he received a Master’s Degree in Physical Education. Wayne was executive director for several YMCA locations, including Knoxville, TN (1955 - 56), Ft. Lauderdale, FL (1956 – 63), Jacksonville, FL (1963 – 68), Burlington, NC (1968 – 80) and Stuart, FL (1980 – retirement 1994). He was very active in many sports, including racquetball and pickleball and enjoyed gardening.
Wayne was a true gentleman and extended his gentle sprit to everyone he interacted with.
Mr. York is survived by his daughter, Melissa York; son, Clint York, Jr. and wife, Rebecca; three grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and his special companion, Rae Ellen Ford. He was preceded in death by his former wives, Rebecca Hoff York and Avis Norris York; his parents; a sister Betty Hayes; and a brother, Bruce York.
The family will conduct a celebration of life at a later date.
