Christine Nelson Straughn

Mrs. Christine Nelson Straughn, 97, of Burlington, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 9, 2022 at Liberty Commons.

Christine was born October 19, 1925 in Caswell County to Arch Grover Nelson and Mary Brooks Nelson.  One of 9 children, she grew up working in the tobacco fields with her family.  She carried over that work ethic into her job as a seamstress for Belk, where she retired after many years of service.  Her job at Belk was reflected in her polished style of dress.  She was a great cook, and always made her son a German chocolate cake on his birthday, which he would freeze and savor throughout the entire year.  A member of First Baptist Church of Alamance, she made many friends there, as well as on her daily walks through her neighborhood.  She will be fondly remembered as a loving mother, the best sister, aunt, and “Grandma Tine” in the world.  In addition to her parents, Christine was preceded in death by her husband, William Alvis Straughn.

Christine is survived by her son, W. Nelson Straughn; brother, John Robert Nelson and wife Brenda; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at 1 PM at Alamance Memorial Park.  Christine will be available for viewing on Tuesday, December 15, 2022 from 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM at Lowe Funeral Home.
