Chester Hogan “Chet” Sykes, 70, passed away on Monday, March 20, 2023 at UNC Chapel Hill Hospital after several weeks of failing health. A native of Alamance County, he was born July 30, 1952 to the late Hedrick Thompson Sykes and Margie Elizabeth Hogan Sykes and was the husband of 38 years to Jackie Elaine Whisenhunt Sykes of the home.
Chester retired from VF Corp. Wrangler, after many years of service. He enjoyed playing golf with his buddies, grilling and spending time at his beach house in Morehead City. He also traveled to many places including Egypt, Puerto Rico and Mexico and took residence in Wilson, Tennessee, El Paso and many other places. Chester loved college baseball and was an avid UNC and ECU fan.
He is survived by his wife, Jackie; daughter, Jennifer Sykes; son, Cameron Sykes; brother, Tom Sykes (Vickie); nephews, Rick Sykes, Matthew Sykes (Whitney); great nieces, Savannah and Claire Sykes and his dog, “Scooter”.
A service to celebrate Chester’s life will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, March 26, 2023 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Darrell Massey with the burial to follow at ChestenutRidge UMC Cemetery in Efland. The family will receive friends from 11:30-1:45 prior to the service at the funeral home.
