Charles Wyrick

Charles A. Wyrick, age 88, died at his home in Gibsonville on Sunday, August 10, 2014, after a year and a half of failing health. Born in Guilford County on June 3, 1926, he was the son of the late H.O. and Mamie W. Wyrick. A graduate of Bessemer High School, Charles worked in textiles his whole life. He attended Elon College, but his real education came on the job where he worked his way up from maintaining machines as a patroller to a widely respected designer of warp knit fabrics for the clothing and automotive industries. Charles ended his long career in textiles at Guilford Mills, where he enjoyed many years and many friends and co-workers. There he was part of a team awarded a patent on a method for creating a warp knitted fabric with a brushable pile on its face and a satin-like surface on its back. Charles was a member of Gibsonville Christian Church for over six decades, serving in many capacities, including deacon, trustee, and treasurer. Besides his career and church, Charles also greatly enjoyed working in his yard, building projects in and around the house, and vacationing at the coast with family and friends. His greatest love, however, was his family. Charles is survived by his wife of 69 years, Audrey Ellen Alcon Wyrick of the home; their three children, Karen W. Garrison, and husband, Steve, of Burlington, Jo W. Hepler and husband, Charlie, of Greensboro, and C. Lynn Wyrick and wife, Maureen Basedow, of Cincinnati, Ohio; six grandchildren, Taylor Garrison, Logan Garrison, Andrew Hepler and wife, Carolyn, Arthur Hepler, Steven Wyrick and Tess Wyrick; two great grandchildren, Callie and Cayden; a sister, Melba W. Hicks; sister-in-law, Dot H. Wyrick; and 16 nieces and nephews and their families. Preceding him in death were his parents and his brother, J. B. Wyrick. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Thursday, August 14, 2014, at Gibsonville Christian Church by Rev. Jones Oliver and Rev. William Baker. Interment will follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Wednesday evening at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at the residence. The family is especially grateful to the staff of Homecare Providers for their professional and compassionate care over the past three years.
