Charles Sayers

Charles D. Sayers, age 69 formerly of Rye, NH was called to heaven after a lengthy illness on February 14, 2015 at the Hospice Home in Burlington, NC surrounded by family. Charlie was born March 28, 1945 in Haverhill, MA to the late Edward L. and Doris J. Noyes Sayers. Surviving are his wife, Nancy Johansen-Wish-Forbes; daughters, Pamela Richards of Pittsfield, NH and Gena James Boyd of Pittsboro, NC, his cherished grandchild, Christina Scott of Chichester, NH; step-son, Mark Wish Melissa of Ashburnham, MA and their son, Jerry; sisters, Peggy Bruce Richardson of Haverhill, MA, Janet Wayne Fortin of Northwood, NH; brothers, Herbert of Merrimac, MA, John Mary Lou of Haverhill, MA, Thomas Barbara of Nottingham, NH and the late Edward Robbie Sayers, Jr. of Oxnard, CA several nieces and nephews and his former wife Janet Pressey Sayers. As a young, married father of two, he joined the international Union of Operating Engineers, Local 4, where he spent thirty-five years working as a heavy equipment operator on various construction sites in New England. After his retirement, he drove a bus for the Portsmouth, NH Senior Housing Authority and later for CJ Transportation in Greensboro, NC. Charlie always took special care of his senior clients and treated them with dignity. His hobbies included playing baseball, gardening, reading, dancing to rock n roll and riding his Harley. He loved watching the Boston sports teams, especially the Boston Red Sox. He accompanied his daughter Gena on several vacations and along with her girl friends, they hosted their fathers on a trip to see the Red Sox play at Fenway Pahk. He and Gena enjoyed a very special relationship. Charlie had a wonderful sense of humor and always had a new joke to tell. He brought smiles to many as they went about their day. Charlie and his family are grateful to all the Duke Cancer Center, Durham, NC for their wonderful care and empathy throughout his battle with pancreatic cancer, among them, Dr. Manisha Palta, Dr. Diana McNeill, Dr. Dan G. Blazer, Sarah Reed, PA, Dr. John Stricker and Evan Dropkin, PA. We also thank the staff of Hospice & Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell Hospice Home for their compassion and warmth. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, February 21st at 11:00 AM at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel, 2205 S. Church St., Burlington, NC 27215. Donations in his memory can be made to either The Lustgarten Foundation, 1111 Stewart Ave., Bethpage, NY 11714 or to the non-profit Hospice & Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Rd., Burlington, NC 27215.
