Burlington - Cecil Carr McClees, Jr. passed away on Monday, November 26, 2018 at Twin Lakes Memory Care in Burlington, NC at the age of 98. He was the only son of the late Mamie Byrd Shaw and Cecil Carr McClees, Sr. Cecil was born in Durham July 28, 1920 and spent most of his life there.
Cecil was married to the late Grace King Stephens, and enjoyed being a part of the lives of her children, the late Nelle Hicks Burgess, Peggy Hicks Wilkenloh and Robert Shields Hicks, Jr. (Wanda). Cecil's children include Anita McClees Marlin (Dean), Eric "Ricky" McClees (Christina), and the late Charlotte McClees by his first wife Beth Tilley McClees who preceded him in death.
Cecil was educated in the Durham City School system and at Duke University. He retired from Duke in the mid 1980s to enjoy a time of travel with his wife Grace to Europe; then, visiting preferred sites of the mainland US in their camper. Cecil served in the United States Army Air-Corps during World War II in the Pacific theater, and was a proud veteran who attained the rank of Captain, March 1944, prior to his Honorable Discharge in May 1946. He and Grace faithfully attended St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Hillsborough, where a graveside service will be held to honor Cecil on Thursday, November 29, 2018 at 11:00am.
