Bruce Buchanan, 91, died at his home on Saturday, April 27 at 11:00 p.m. 

Bruce was born on September 6, 1932 and spent his early years growing up in the mountains of Avery County, North Carolina. He graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College in 1954 and obtained a master’s degree from Appalachian State University in 1966. He was also a member of the 16th Executive Business Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is an army veteran, having served in the Korean conflict. He was a 50-year member of Linville Lodge #489. Bruce had a long and rewarding career in textiles with Glen Raven, Inc. for 40 years until his retirement in 2000.

Bruce was a Scotsman. He was proud of his Scottish heritage. 

He has been a deacon in the Christian church since the age of 17 and serving as elder until the present time. He and his family are charter members of the Burlington Christian Church, helping plant the church in 1971. He has served faithfully since that time.

Bruce is proceeded in death by his parents, Howard and Odee Buchanan, brothers, William “Bill” Buchanan and Robert “Bob” Buchanan, and a sister, Betty Jo Ellis. He is survived by his wife of 67 years and childhood sweetheart, Barbara “Barb”, three daughters, Julie Thompson (Wes), Jan Moser (Frank), and Joan Dawson (Bobby), six grandchildren, Trey Moser (Krista), Kristen Nix (Brandon), Elizabeth McDougal (Matt), Taylor Saxe (Taylor), Weston Thompson, and Kathryn King (Brock), and nine great grandchildren, Kennedy Moser, Hayes Nix, Hudson Nix, Savannah Moser, Smith Saxe, Riley Nix, Eli McDougal, Barnes Saxe, Liam Moser, and another great granddaughter due in July. He also has several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the Burlington Christian Church on Saturday, May 4 from 10:00-10:45 a.m. The memorial service will begin at 11:00 a.m. A private family gathering is planned at the gravesite.
