Burlington – Bobby Ray Whitfield, 83, passed away on Saturday, February 27, 2021 at Moses Cone Hospital with his wife, Mary Jo Smith Whitfield of 64 years by his side. He was born on July 29, 1937 in Davidson County to the late Arthur Garfield Whitfield and Maggie Mae Goins Whitfield.
Bobby was a Christian Minister for over 60 years, pastoring several local churches including Efland UMC, Salem UMC, St. Luke’s UMC and Union UCC. He was a member of Front Street Christian Church and was currently attending St. Luke’s UMC. Bobby enjoyed traveling with his wife to the mountains and beach. He was an avid writer on matters of the Bible, specifically the Book of Revelations, and loved spending time with his family.
Survivors other than his wife, Mary Jo Whitfield include his son, Michael Ray Whitfield and wife, Jeannine; a daughter, Lisa W. Howard and husband, Danny; grandchildren, Christy (Greg) Huff, Patty Phinney, Anna Phinney, Eric Whitfield and Logan Whitfield; great grandchildren, Sarah, Will, Kinsley, Mikayla and Zachary Huff, Phinleigh Carver and Emberlynn Shirk; a sister, Carolyn (Marvin) Watts and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Samuel Lee Whitfield and grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Phinney and Michelle Leigh Whitfield.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00am Thursday, March 4, 2021 at St. Luke’s UMC by Rev. Tommy Privette. The graveside service will be at 2:00pm Thursday at Floral Garden Park Cemetery in High Point. Bobby will be available for viewing from 12-5pm on Wednesday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory and one hour prior to the service on Thursday at St. Luke’s UMC. The family will receive friends at the home.
